A long-time Portuguese colony sitting deep into the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa, the island now known as Santiago was originally settled to be used as a slave trading outpost. Over time the other islands of this volcanic archipelago were inhabited and, today, the Cape Verde Islands offer a spellbinding blend of African and Portuguese influences in their architecture, food, customs and traditions.
With a pleasant year-round climate, this island chain offers a diverse range of landscapes from verdant mountain ranges, lush hills and jungles, volcanic landscapes or wide deserted beaches. The harbours and towns are extremely welcoming to visitors – they don’t get many! It’s still a comparatively undiscovered, natural and fresh sort of place and long may that last, we say. All things considered, this is a journey that will open up a vibrant and colourful world, all set against the gentle rhythms of West African music.

The islands of the Cape Verde archipelago are famous for their tropical beaches – to our mind every bit as impressive as those you’ll find in the Caribbean. They don’t get more drop-dead gorgeous than the extravagant expanse of sand you find at the southern tip of Sal in the village of Santa Maria. It is exactly the place you would expect to find an upscale hotel like a Hilton and this one has everything you need to kick back, chill out and get into the holiday mood pre-cruise. Between the sea, the beach and the beach bar you probably won’t spend much time in the rooms, but they are modern, large and very comfortably appointed with pool or ocean views. The hotel has three restaurants offering a mix of local and international cuisine, a pool bar, a beach bar and an indoor bar which features cocktails and local musicians every evening. Get lucky in the casino and you might pay for your holiday! If you want to check out the island, features like the Vivero Botanical Gardens are only a short cab ride away.
